The Sacrament of Confirmation
A Strong Driving Wind
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,* which parted and came to rest on each one of them.– Acts 2:2-3
Like Baptism which it completes, Confirmation is given only once, for it too imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark, the “character,” which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with power from on high so that he may be his witness.
– The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1304
The Sacrament of Confirmation seals our life of faith in Jesus. Its signs are the laying on of hands on a person’s head, most often by a bishop, and the anointing with oil. Like Baptism, Confirmation is received only once.
Confirmands Under the Age of 18
Those under the age of 18, (who have been baptized and have had both their first communion and first reconciliation), in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, receive this sacrament at the age of 16-17 (11th Grade) through the Religious Education Program. As with all sacramental preparation programs for youth, individuals must be in formation for at least the entire year prior to the year the sacrament is celebrated. The program follows the school year calendar with registration in August.
Adult Confirmands
Adults – Seniors in high school or older, including all adults who have been baptized in another Christian denomination, go through the Adult Confirmation Program. This process begins with a meeting with the Adult Formation Director, which may happen at any time of the year so the process may begin at any time of the year. The length of the process and meeting times will vary with each individual’s circumstances. Registration is ongoing and questions are welcome at any time.
